The naval signal known as Bravo Zulu, also abbreviated as "BZ," which combines the nautical signal flags for
Bravo and Zulu, signifies "Well Done" in reference to actions, operations, or performance. It is typically transmitted by flag hoist or voice radio.
Why do people say Bravo Zulu?
The naval signal "Bravo Zulu," which can be communicated by flag hoist or voice radio and means "well done," has entered both spoken and written language.
What is the Army equivalent of Bravo Zulu?
Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu are the letters in the NATO alphabet.
This is a naval signal that means "well done," communicated by
flag hoist or voice radio. It has since entered both spoken and written language. It can be used in conjunction with the "negative" signal, spoken or written NEGAT, to express "not well done" or "NEGAT
Bravo Zulu."
Members of the sea services frequently use "BZ" as shorthand (i.e., navies, Marines, and those coast guards that are military services versus civilian agencies). In the Royal Navy, the order to "splice the mainbrace," or to give the crew an additional rum ration, is typically followed by the signal or remark "
Bravo Zulu," when the sovereign wishes to reward the crew of a British warship.
Before ACP 175, the U.S. Navy used a signal code that denoted "well done" as TVG, which stands for "Tare Victor George" in the country's phonetic alphabet. ACP 175 was structured similarly to other signal books, beginning with
1-flag signals, moving on to 2-flag signals, and so forth. Starting with AA, AB, AC,... AZ, BA, BB, BC,... BZ, and so on, the 2-flag signals were arranged by general subject. The B- signals, also known as "Administrative" signals, deal with various administrative and housekeeping issues. "
Well done" was the final signal on the "Administrative" page, which was BZ.
