Numerous cultures around the world have forms of skull art. Native Mexican art honors the skeleton and frequently features it as a motif. Before the Conquest, the Aztecs, who were masters of stone sculpture, used skulls and skeletons to create striking carvings of their gods.

The skeleton, a representation of the unformed, immediately evokes thoughts of death. But the skeleton does more than just stand for death; paradoxically, it also brings the unformer's symbolism to life. The skeleton also symbolizes abundance and rebirth in the realm of life through this symbolism.
